The concept of limnality is incredibly important to me.
My favorite books always explore territory between the safe and the uncanny, as does my writing and my art. I love Margaret Atwood and Shirley Jackson; Mad Men, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and Breaking Bad.
I was asking myself an aesthetic question about movies I’d love to live in, and the list is incoherent on the surface: Gattaca, Clockwork Orange, Umbrellas of Cherbourg, Sleeper, Rosemary’s Baby. A mix of mostly sci-fi and horror, nearly all with a cheery midcentury visual slant.
Danielle LaPorte’s Style Statement philosophy espouses the 80/20 rule. She suggests arriving at two words: one is your 80%, the other your 20%. It’s perfectly okay if they conflict at the core. Visually, thematically, Edward Scissorhands is a good pick: 80% the bright modernist village and 20% the neo-gothic castle.
The bright orange plastic skull my boyfriend got for me is a near-perfect representation of the style I’m creating. It’s in one of my signature colors, too.
